The Facts
Before the 1980s, vehicle headlights were made of glass. In the late ’80s, car manufacturers began designing cars with much more aerodynamic shapes. Polycarbonate plastic was developed and used to create headlights that were very strong, durable, easily molded and much safer than glass.
The problem with polycarbonate plastic is that it is very porous, which makes the lens extremely vulnerable to the elements. A protective coating with UV inhibitors is applied to the lens to keep the plastic from deteriorating. Without proper care, that coating eventually fails. This is what causes your lenses to flake, oxidize, yellow and turn cloudy and hazy — and in some cases lose up to 70% of their visibility and performance.
